Happy Birthday, Mickey Mouse! On this day in 1928, Walt Disney Productions released “Steamboat Willie” at B.S. Moss’s Colony in New York, his first major step in becoming a film star and icon for The Walt Disney Company.
“Steamboat Willie” is a parody of Bill Keaton’s “Steamboat Bill, Jr.,” which was released earlier that year. It was the first cartoon to feature fully synchronized sound, a technology that accounts for some of the animated short’s appeal and which was central to its marketing. Walt Disney used the cartoon’s post-produced soundtrack to differentiate his Mickey Mouse cartoon from other animated shorts.
