Desperate Housewives' Latest "Surprises" ...

I'm pretty sure that last night's episode of Desperate Housewives was supposed to be one of those jaw-dropping, surprise-revealing, gasp-causing episodes. But it wasn't. At all. To be fair, some major stuff was revealed—Bree's (Marcia Cross) first husband Rex had a son before he married her, Nick (Jeffrey Nordling) isn't Danny's (Beau Mirchoff) real father, Gaby's (Eva Longoria Parker) modeling career was ruined by her own ego. These are all Important Facts. But are any of these Important Facts really that surprising? I'm all for character development. It's just that Desperate Housewives relies too heavily on the secrets-from-the-past tactic, rather than finding ways to illuminate who that character is now, in the present. In fact, desperate housewives is really a nice tv show.
