Colorado Springs Police Department runs a weekly feature called “The Cold Case Files.” The Colorado Springs Police Department Homicide Cold Case Unit is currently responsible for approximately 90 unsolved homicide cases dating back to 1949. CSPD considers a case to be cold if it remains unsolved for more than one year. The Victim: Dequincy King, 19, who had moved from Gulfport, Miss., to Colorado Springs to look for work. He had been in Colorado Springs for about a week when he was fatally shot.

on Jan. 24, 2004, apparently while sitting in a car in parking lot of an apartment complex behind Papasan’s Sports Bar, 315 E. Arvada St., near Interstate 25 and South Nevada Avenue. He had been in the bar earlier with friends, who drove him to Memorial Hospital. King was left bleeding from the gunshot wound to his head at the entrance to the emergency room. He died just after 6 a.m.
The investigation: Papasan’s had remained open after the 2 a.m. closing time to host an after-hours party the morning of the murder. Witnesses told police that King had been tired and went to the car to rest about 2:40 a.m. People checked on him twice in the next hour and he spoke with a relative during that time. At 3:50 a.m., someone checking on him noticed blood on King’s face and rushed him to the hospital.
The car in which King is was resting was parked outside an apartment complex that was under surveillance for suspected prostitution and drug dealing, The Gazette reported in 2004. No suspects have been named and no arrests made.
